Hill End Venue Details
Find your heart and soul and step back in time by visiting this historic area. Since Russell Drysdale and Donald Friend famously rediscovered the site in 1947, the Hill End painting grounds have become a mecca for generations of artists. (Gavin Wilson)
Early Australian Facades and buildings line the streets of Hill End that once boasted a bakery, blacksmith, general stores, courhouse, post office and 28 hotels! Today there is a reminder of what once was.
The Royal Hotel is in the village and Hill End Lodge is on the outskirts. Both will provide your basic needs and requirements at good rates. They offer clean rooms, comfortable bed and reasonably priced meals. Strike up lively conversation with one of the many miners looking for gold. Take a walking tour around this heritage village and visit the museum and you will understand why so many of Australia’s important artists were drawn to the town and surrounding area.
Hill End is about 3.5 hours by car north-west of Sydney. When you hit the patches of dirt road, you know you are almost there. Take the Great Western Highway through the Blue Mountains or the Bells Line of Road via Windsor and Richmond. (At Lithgow, follow the signs to Hill End)
