Thomson studied with Jon Molvig in the mid 1950s then left Brisbane for Sydney where she completed her studies at the National Art School in 1962. Her first solo exhibition was with Watters Gallery in the 1960s.

Her work continues to be exhibited throughout Australia and abroad and has been curated in numerous institutional exhibitions. In 1977 Thomson's works was the subject of a major exhibition at the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane and a survey exhibition of the artist's work was curated by Monash University, Melbourne in 1980.

Recipient of the Wynne Prize AGNSW in 1998, she also won the Geelong Contemporary Art Prize in 2002 and was awarded the Kedumba Drawing Award in 2005.
