Artist Profile: Brett McMahon

Brett McMahon

Brett McMahon was born in 1966 in the port city of Newcastle. McMahon has been regularly exhibiting since 1990 and is widely known for his robust, architecturally based abstract style.

McMahon’s art explores spatial tensions and relationships, through an investigation of a painterly language. McMahon uses various tools and methods to apply paint to the surface to create different visual effects. The works’ compositions of jostling textures, colour and motifs are often drawn from a wide vocabulary of sources; the inner city area of Sydney; the industrial infrastructure of Newcastle; and the drought affected landscape of the Hunter Valley in New South Wales.

Sebastian Smee has referred to McMahon’s visual language as emulating the Piranesian networks” of industrial architecture. McMahon is represented in the collections of Newcastle, Dubbo and Lake Macquarie Regional Galleries; Artbank; University of Technology, Sydney; corporate collections including Macquarie Bank and private collections throughout Australia, Europe, United States of America and the United Kingdom.
